Resizing Quilt Patterns

Welcome to day 6 of the Pixelating Blog Hop!

My new book, Designing Block Quilts can be used for many different things.  You know you can use it to design and create your own patterns, but did you know you can use it to resize existing patterns?

Chapter 1 is all about the Math of designing your own patterns.  But the formulas can also be used for resizing patterns.  I took my Japanese Wood Spirit and Magical Girl patterns and shrunk them down.  The results are rather cute wall hangings!

They turned out so well, I may have to make smaller versions of other patterns and hang them on my walls.

So make that pattern bigger or smaller!  It is up to you!

Make sure you read each of the hoppers blogs.  They are making some pretty cool things.

Pixelating Blog Hop

Welcome to the Pixelating Blog Hop!

I wanted a way to launch my new book Designing Block Quilts with style so I asked a few pretty cool people if they would help me out and use my book to create pixelated works of art!

So what is this book?  After the success of the pixelated geeky pattern line, I was asked to teach others my techniques of pixelation.  Designing Block Quilts teaches you the math and design tips you need to create your own pixelated masterpieces.  It then shows you three different ways to pattern your design to give your creation the exact look you want.

Over the next two weeks you will see blog posts from people who have made some amazing things.  Each person was asked to make a project using the techniques in my book as a guide.  I was blown away when I saw what they did.  I can't wait for you to see them!

Globetrotter Blog Hop

You may have seen the Evil Robot pattern inspired by the Daleks from Dr Who I released in May.

But I bet you didn't know the reason we created the pattern and released it in May was because of Tammy's new fabric line with Island Batik, Globetrotter.

You see all of those amazing tones of fabric?  Especially those with the circles.  They reminded me of the Daleks and the nodes that can be found on them.  After playing with colors I decided to supplement the Dalek colors with Red and Black Basics from Island Batik.  The finished Evil Robot looks amazing in these fabrics.

So head to your local quilt or sewing store and check out these new fabrics for yourself.  Trust me, pictures don't do them justice.

Like giveaways?  Of course you do if you read my blog or watch my Twitch stream!  There is a giveaway for the blog hop!  Head on over to the giveaway page to enter!

Make sure you check out the other designers and see what they have done with this really cool fabric line!

Dealing with Tools and Rulers

Welcome to the sixth and Final week of the Creative Spaces Blog Hop!
Today is all about dealing with tools and rulers.

I am THE WORST when it comes to organizing my tools and rulers.  I literally throw all of my tools and needles into the drawers of my Olivia Sewing Cabinet.  Don't believe me?

I even store my rulers between one thread cabinet and my sewing cabinet.  I used to hang them on the way using nails, but since I started Twitch streaming there isn't much wall space.  I have a few panel quilts hanging behind me instead.

The one that I do have organized is my travel case!  I have every foot and tool I may need when on the road.  I use it every day, even when I am in my home studio.  It is a simple acrylic case normally used for Cross Stitch or Beading.

How do you organize your rulers and tools?  Let me know!

Want to come hang out while I stream?  My schedule is always on my Facebook and my Twitter.  I also announce on Instagram when I go live.  We have a lot of fun, talk about sewing and quilting and of course have daily giveaways.  I am the giveaway queen after all.

Speaking of giveaways, let’s get to them!

First, the overall prizes. Crafters Edge is giving away their Crossover II Fabric and Cutting system plus several die packs. Daylight is giving away a Slimline LED table lamp. Basal is also donating some prizes. To enter, make sure you visit www.cherryblossomsquilting.com/blog.

Dealing with Thread

Welcome to the fifth week of the Creative Spaces Blog Hop!
Today is all about dealing with thread.

I showed you two weeks ago the furniture I use for my thread, the cabinets from Arrow.

The Mod Thread Caddy will come with 4 fabric baskets to place all your fabric and notions in and 3 pull out thread/spool holders holding countless spools.  Place your thread in the racks in a color coordinated fashion, by size, by brand, or by material…..the options are endless!

The Modular Thread Caddy rests on casters allowing you to move it from place to place. Once in place the casters lock down in place and the bi-fold door closes to conceal the contents for a clean and neat look.  It fits all types of thread, even Aurifil and Signature!

I organize mine by brand and color.  I even have space to separate out the large spools!
My favorite organizer is one that Gutermann recently sent me.  It allows me to spin and choose which sew-all thread I want for my project.

How do you organize your thread?  Let me know!

Dealing with Fabric

Welcome to the fourth week of the Creative Spaces Blog Hop!
Today is all about dealing with fabric.

I have a LOT of fabric.  I currently have 5 bookcases full of fabric I keep in my studio.  Keeping it all organized and displayed was a challenge for a while.

There are many ways you can choose to store your fabric:
  • Plastic storage totes or drawers
  • Collapsible Bins on storage shelving
  • Folded neatly on shelves
  • Boarded onto shelves
You need to take a few things into consideration when storing your fabric:
  • Will it be in direct sunlight?
  • Do I need to easily see what I have?
  • Do I organize by color, pattern, project, fabric line, or other method?
My space is in the basement out of direct sunlight and I need to quickly see every fabric I have.  So this led me to boarding it.  There are a few methods to boarding it.  You can do it yourself with comic boards, cardboard, etc.  You can also purchase specially designed boards meant to wrap your fabric like Fabric Organizers or Mini Bolts.  I have tried all of these methods for boarding my fabric and like the Polar Notions the best.

The problems I had with all other methods of boarding was the sliding of fabric down from the board or the board itself folding under the weight of the fabric.  Polar Notions has solved both of those problems.  The boards are strong and sturdy, holding the weight of all of my fabric.  They also have metal clips that when you fold the end of the bolt in and clip it, solves the problem of slippage.  It also allows the bolts to be put into and removed from the bookcase with greater ease without all of the loose fabric getting in the way.

How do you organize your fabric?  Let me know!

Want to come hang out while I stream?  My schedule is always on my Facebook and my Twitter.  I also announce on Instagram when I go live.  We have a lot of fun, talk about sewing and quilting and of course have daily giveaways.  I am the giveaway queen after all.
