Organizing Tips

Welcome to the third week of the Creative Spaces Blog Hop!  Today is all about organizing tips.

First, the thread.  I have a LOT of thread.  In order to organize it all I have two thread cabinets from Arrow.  They allow me to store all of my thread as well as give a place for my scrap fabrics.

Next the scissors.  I had many discussions with my family about how my sewing scissors are only to be used for fabric.  I finally thought of a solution, separate the scissors and tell them to never touch them!  To separate them I use a magnetic knife rack from Ikea.

Binding is the bane of my existence.  I hate making binding.  So I was overjoyed to discover binding by the roll.  But how to store it?  I came up with the solution of ribbon racks.  I am able to store the binding and then use it directly off the rack.  It is easy and takes a lot less time when I am doing my binding!

Want to come hang out while I stream?  My schedule is always on my Facebook and my Twitter.  I also announce on Instagram when I go live.  We have a lot of fun, talk about sewing and quilting and of course have daily giveaways.  I am the giveaway queen after all.

Favorite Tools

Welcome to the second week of the creative spaces blog hop!

Today I am going to talk about my favorite tools.  As a pixel quilter I do a LOT of stripping.  Stripping is one of the foundations of the techniques I use for pixel quilting.  Because of this there are two main tools I use help speed up the efficiency of stripping and chain piecing.

First, what the heck is stripping?!  Stripping is a way to describe Strip Piecing.  Instead of cutting each individual square, you cut strips of fabric and sew those together.  Pieces are cut from these strips saving time!  The biggest time saver for strip piecing for me is the Stripology ruler by Creative Grids.

This ruler allows me to cut strips fast!  Want to see how it is used?  Quilty Love has a great tutorial on how to use it

Want to see it in action on my Twitch stream?  This is from my St Jude Charity stream in May.

The second item that speeds up my quilting a lot is the Cutting Gizmo by Gypsy Quilter.

It allows me to separate chained pieces quickly.  No reaching for scissors!  I love this simple little device.  I have seen people make their own using spools of thread and seam rippers, but the sturdy base of the cutting gizmo allows me to move quickly.

Speaking of seam rippers, every studio or sewing place needs a REALLY good seam ripper.  Let's face it, it doesn't matter how long you have been quilting or sewing you are going to make a mistake.  I do ALL the time!  My go to seam ripper is the Seam Fix Seam Ripper by Dritz.

The seam ripper itself is nice, but the best part of it is the rubber stopper at the end.  This rubber stopper allows me to get rid of those little leftover threads VERY quickly.

Studio Redesign

Welcome to the Creative Spaces Blog Hop!

It is a crazy 6 week journey with a ton of people!  Each week we will all tackle one subject.  There are also a lot of giveaways!!  (More on those at the end).

This is week 1 where we each talk about our Studio Clean up.  I am going to be a little different and talk about my studio redesign.

Back in the late part of 2016 I had this great idea.  I wanted to stream on Twitch.  I had a studio in the my basement and wanted to be able to interact with people while I created quilts and patterns.  I had a very basic set up.
It felt cramped though.  Once I added in a few cameras and lights I wasn't going to be able to move around a lot.

During Fall Quilt Market of 2016 I met the amazing people at Arrow Sewing Cabinets.  They agreed to work with me to redesign my space and make it more streamer friendly.  I was very excited and couldn't wait for my boxes of furniture to get started!

First I had to get everything moved so I could paint the walls.

Then I got to put my brand new Arrow furniture together!  I went with a cool stylish table and a few thread cabinets (I will get to those during week 5).

My finished studio was a dream come true!

Next was the streaming equipment!  I got a few cameras and lights and set everything up.

It was very simple to find the right lights but cameras were a little harder.  I ended up settling on the Logitech 922.  Over the past year I have gone to a 4 camera system but the overall design hasn't changed much.

Want to come hang out while I stream?  My schedule is always on my Facebook and my Twitter.  I also announce on Instagram when I go live.  We have a lot of fun, talk about sewing and quilting and of course have daily giveaways.  I am the giveaway queen after all.
